ERBIL, Kurdistan Region – The ethnically diverse special unit of the Iraqi Army known as the Golden Force has announced that dozens of Islamic State fighters were killed in the town of Albu Faraj, north of Ramadi in Anbar province.
“Due to heavy clashes between ISIS and the Golden Force, 60 ISIS militants were killed and four armored vehicles and car bombs were destroyed. Iraqi and coalition warplanes have been shelling ISIS positions in the area,” Brigadier General Abdul Amir Khazraji, deputy commander of the Golden Force, told the press on Monday.
Islamic State fighters launched a heavy attack on the town of Albu Faraj late on Thursday and early Friday, killing 25 Iraqi police officers and soldiers. Fifteen family members of local police officers were also killed, according to Iraqi officials.
The Golden Force is a special division of the Iraqi Army led by Major General Fadhil Barwari, a Kurdish officer.
