BAGHDAD, Iraq – Rockets fired on the city of Karbala in southern Iraq, where Shiite pilgrims have gathered from Iran and elsewhere for an important religious anniversary, killed one person and wounded two others.

“Two of the rockets landed in the Saif al-Saad area and another rocket targeted an apartment, killing one person,” a source said.

Other rockets reportedly also were fired on the main Karbala-Anbar road.

Sunni extremists, including the Islamic State (ISIS) which has conquered about a third of Iraq, especially target Shiite Muslims and other religious minorities.

Karbala, the holiest city for the world’s Shiites, is marking an important religious anniversary for Imam Hussein, an important saint whose shrine is in Karbala. More than 17 million pilgrims have visited the city in recent weeks for the anniversary.
