ERBIL, Kurdistan Region – Iraq's Security Forces (ISF) forced Islamic State (ISIS) from the center of the city of Hit in Anbar province on Monday.
The Iraqi Counter-Terrorism Service and Joint Operations confirmed this. The ISF reportedly flew an Iraqi flag over the city's municipal building.
This comes after weeks of fighting by the ISF aimed at prying that city, which is situated 100 miles west of the capital Baghdad, from ISIS's grip. ISIS managed to takeover Hit back in October 2014.
The ISF, with close US-led coalition air support, successfully retook Anbar's capital Ramadi last December. The offensive in Hit as part of a larger offensive in western Anbar aimed at retaking the entirety of that province.
