ERBIL, Kurdistan region – The US-led coalition to fight the Islamic State (ISIS) carried out 32 airstrikes in Iraq and 14 in Syria on Monday, US Defense Ministry announced in a statement. The airstrikes in Syria targeted at least seven ISIS bases and several armored vehicles were destroyed near Kobane, ethically Kurdish city in northearn Syria. Also on Monday, Kurdish Peshmerga forces cleared a large swath of territory south of the oil-rich city of Kirkuk in an advance backed by heavy airstrikes from the coalition forces. Coalition airstrikes, carried out in areas near to the cities of Kirkuk, Mosul and Fallujah, reportedly destroyed a number of ISIS bases. Iraq’s local military forces have also been actively operating in different parts of Iraq with support from US-led coalition airstrikes. Military efforts to retake Iraqi city of Tikrit, the hometown of former dictator Saddam Hussein, is now on its ninth day, with officials claiming the city will be recaptured soon.
