ERBIL, Kurdistan Region – Three political blocs have formed the Majority National Paternal Alliance, committed to strengthening a unified Iraq’s democracy and freedoms.

The winning Sayirun bloc of Muqtada al-Sadr met with Ammar al-Hakim’s Hikma Movement and Ayad Allawi’s al-Wataniya list on Thursday.

They issued a brief road map outlining their core principles of strengthening Iraq’s unity, democracy, and freedoms, and a commitment to the constitution.

The alliance proposes a government plan to be implemented within a determined timeline.

The plan includes economic reforms, activating the private sector, and encouraging investment.

Administratively, it calls for decentralization and non-politicization of governmental and administrative branches.

Weapons must be solely in the hands of the government and the military must not be politicized, they stated.

Tackling corruption, helping displaced citizens return to their homes, and ensuring the independence of the judiciary are some of the other cornerstones of the alliance.

The agreement also stipulates the ratification of the Federal Council Law within two years.

The Federal Council is a constitutional entity that should have been established alongside the Federal Court. Kurdish parties have long demanded it be established, arguing the council is important to protecting Iraq’s federalism.

The Sayirun alliance is a unique meeting of Shiite cleric Sadr, the Communist Party, and secularists.  The Hikma group is Shiite and Wataniya is Sunni.
