KIRKUK, Kurdistan Region—Coalition fighter jets bombed Islamic State (ISIS) positions south of Kirkuk Sunday evening, killing a large number of militants, a security official said.
The official said that the airstrikes targeted ISIS bunkers and bases in two villages and the towns of Rashad, Hawija and Riyadh.
The areas bombed today are in the heart of ISIS territory where the group has heavy military presence for hundreds of miles.
Sarhad Qadir, chief of Kirkuk suburban police told Rudaw that a high-ranking ISIS commander was admitted into Hawija hospital on Sunday.
“According to our special sources the militants had brought an ISIS commander who was wounded in fighting somewhere north of Baghdad,” Qadir said. “The group has put the hospital under tight security.”
Also on Sunday the ISIS president of Mosul University was reportedly killed in an airstrike.
A source inside the city said that Khalid Muhammad al-Afari who was appointed by ISIS as president of the university was killed in a coalition airstrike.
