ERBIL, Kurdistan Region – Three mortar shells landed in Baghdad’s fortified Green Zone overnight, causing no damage.

The mortars fell just after midnight Friday morning, the Iraqi military said in a statement. They landed in an abandoned lot and there were no “casualties or physical damage.”

No group has immediately claimed responsibility.

The Green Zone is home to Iraqi government offices and foreign missions.

The US-led international coalition to defeat ISIS explained to Rudaw in an interview on Friday night that it was likely a "one time deal."

"I don't think it's part of the security situation at all. There are a lot of malign actors out there who would like to hurt coalition folks to include citizens of Iraq," said coalition spokesperson US Army Col. Sean Ryan.

The Iraqi Security Forces responded and "took care of those individuals."

"This was a misguided attempt. They tried to fire six rockets and three of them hit an open lot and three didn't hit anything," he said.

"I think this is just a one time deal ... the security situation in Iraq is a lot better right now.

The assault in the capital comes as the south of the country is rocked by angry protests upset about widespread corruption, lack of basic services, and high unemployment.

Several party and militia offices were set on fire in Basra Thursday night.
