ERBIL, Kurdistan Region — More than 15 Islamic State fighters were killed and seven of the group's military vehicles were destroyed Thursday by Shiite militias fighting for the Iraqi government in Anbar province, a commander with Iraqi forces told Rudaw.
Colonel Marzi Mahmud Jumaili, a commander with the Hashd al-Shaabi, or Popular Mobilization Units, said in a statement released Thursday that the Shiite fighters managed to launch a counterattack on the ISIS militants east of the city of Fallujah, killing the 15 militants and injuring 25 others.
Jumaili claimed the Hashd al-Shaabi, as the Shiite militias are known, seized seven vehicles from ISIS and four where rigged with explosives.
In January 2014, ISIS militants swept into Fallujah and parts of Ramadi in Iraq's Anbar province, which Iraqi security forces soon abandoned.
Since then, Iraqi forces in corporation with the Hashd al-Shaabi and backed by US-led coalition airstrikes have fought to recapture areas from ISIS.
