ERBIL, Kurdistan Region — US-led airstrikes have killed the ISIS police chief of Hawija in Kirkuk province, a Kirkuk area police official told Rudaw on Wednesday.

“Due to the airstrike, the ISIS police chief  Jasim Shakir was killed inside Hawija,” said Sarhad Qadir, Kirkuk’s provincial police chief.

“The warplanes also bombarded two other sub-districts around Hawija and many other ISIS militants who were with the police chief were killed by the bombardment,” Qadir continued.

In early April, the Peshmerga warned the Iraqi government they would only move further against ISIS under orders from higher authorities, and that any offensive on Hawija would need to be led by the Iraqi army and Shiite militias, commonly referred to in Arabic as Hashd al-Shaabi, a Peshmerga official told Rudaw.

Hawija city is the capital of the Hawija district in Kirkuk province, 30 miles south of Kirkuk.
