ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - At least 19 Iraqi police and security officers were killed on Sunday when Islamic State (ISIS) suicide bombers stormed the army base Speicher near Tikrit.
A source in the Iraqi police told Rudaw that eight ISIS militants wearing explosive belts broke into the base where two of them blew themselves up.
The attack occurred at 10:00 a.m.
Security guards managed to stop six of the attackers before detonating their explosives.
Speicher is 140 KM north of Baghdad and it is the site of one of ISIS's most gruesome killings where the group executed around 1,700 Iraqi army cadets in June 2014.
