ERBIL, Kurdistan Region – A suicide car bombing has hit a warehouse storing election ballots in Kirkuk in the early dawn on Sunday morning.
Security forces opened fire on the driver of the explosive-laden car, causing the driver to detonate the vehicle at the gate of the warehouse, police sources told Reuters.
A police source told Rudaw that one person was killed and 21 others wounded.
At least 15 members of security forces are among the wounded.
Rakan al-Jabouri, acting governor of Kirkuk visited the site of the bombing. He said that the warehouse building was damaged, but the ballot boxes were not affected.
No group has immediately claimed responsibility.
The incident comes a day after the Iraqi election commission announced it would begin the parliament-mandated manual recount of the May 12 election on Tuesday in Kirkuk.
In June, fire ripped through a Baghdad warehouse storing ballots. At least four people have been detained in connection with the incident.
