ERBIL, Kurdistan Region – Iraqi Prime Minister, Haidar al-Abadi on Sunday, ordered the arrest of angry protesters, one day after they broke through the Green Zone barriers and entered the Iraqi Parliament, a government statement announced.
Abadi said the protesters, who smashed windows and furniture in the parliament on Saturday, must be brought to justice.
A Kurdish lawmaker told Rudaw that it was the security forces and not the protesters who should be questioned as they were responsible for protecting the Green Zone and the parliament.
“There are nine checkpoints at three gates into the Green Zone that were expected to prevent protesters from entering. If someone should be questioned, it is the security forces," MP Shakhawan Abdulla said.
Clashes between protesters and security erupted outside the parliament building in Baghdad on Sunday, where protesters who stormed the building the previous afternoon had remained overnight, a Rudaw reporter on the scene said.
Correspondent Bahman Hassan said that a massive security force was deployed in Baghdad’s fortified Green Zone. It is believed they have been ordered by Abadi to confront the protesters.
The Iraqi capital has been tense since thousands of protesters smashed Green Zone blast walls and swarmed the parliament building on Saturday afternoon.
