ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - The United States Treasury Department has placed sanctions on two Iranian companies who are believed to have aided and abetted Iran’s ballistic missile program.

“We will continue to use all of our tools to counteract Iran’s ballistic missile program and support for terrorism, including through sanctions,” said the undersecretary for terrorism and financial intelligence Adam Szubin in a statement from the department on Thursday.

The Iranian Shahid Nuri Industries and Shahid Movahed Industries were cut off from the international financial system for working with the Shahid Hemmat Industrial Group (SHIG) which the US charges with financing the construction of Iranian missiles.

Two British businessmen, Jeffrey John James Ashfield and John Edwards Meadows, were also blacklisted by the Treasury Department since their businesses have supported the Iranian Mahan Air airline. The US charges Mahan Air with transporting equipment, soldiers and weapons to Syria to assist the Syrian regime of President Bashar al-Assad.

While most of the economic sanctions that were leveled against Iran were lifted in January as part of the nuclear deal reached between Iran and the P5+1 powers the US government still forbids American citizens from doing business with Iran and has also placed fresh sanctions on its missile program, whose development it wants to see curbed as part of the nuclear deal.
