ERBIL, Kurdistan Region—Reports from inside Iran say that a second brigadier general was killed in battle in Syria this week.
Muhsin Qajarian who was in Syria as a military advisor was killed in the province of Aleppo.
Pro-government media in Iran described Qajarian as a martyr who “died to protect the shrine,”
Thousands of former Iranian soldiers and officers are believed to have traveled to Syria to fight alongside regime forces under “defenders of the shrine,”
The Sayyida Zeinab shrine in Damascus is one of the holiest places of the Shiite faith.
Second Brig. General Qajarian was a veteran commander during the Iran-Iraq war in the 1980s and was appointed commander of the armored troops in 2011.
Last October General Hossein Hamadani was also killed in northwestern Syria in an Islamic State (ISIS) attack.
