ERBIL, Kurdistan Region — A notorious Taliban leader is reportedly dead, Pakistani officials were quoted as saying Wednesday.
The BBC has reported via an anonymous source that Mullah Mohammed Omar, the reclusive Taliban leader in Afghanistan, died two years ago. The Afghan government is expected to release a statement shortly over the death of the one-eyed supreme commander of the Taliban.
Meanwhile, reports released by several media outlets in Pakistan cited Pakistani officials who affirmed the death of the Taliban leader.
According to the various sources, Mullah Omar, who has not been seen in public for more than a decade, was killed by fellow Taliban commanders Mullah Akhtar Muhammad Mansoor and Gull Agha in July 2013.
This is not the first time that the news of the death of Mullah Omar has been claimed.
Reports of Mullah Omar's death came two days ahead of the next round of negotiations between the Taliban and Kabul officials, which are set to take place in Pakistan.
