US Secretary of Dense Ashton Carter said on Saturday that some of Washington's 65 coalition allies in the war against the Islamic State (ISIS) do "nothing at all" to help American-led efforts.

"Many of them are not doing enough, or are doing nothing at all," Carter remarked in an interview with CNBC at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.

"We can do a lot ourselves... [but] we are looking for other people to play their part," he added.

In a separate interview with Bloomberg TV he insisted that, "We need others to carry their weight, there should be no free riders."

He didn't specify what countries exactly he was referring to. However Washington is disappointed at how little the Sunni Arab monarchies of the Persian Gulf have contributed to the ISIS fight, especially since Saudi Arabia has been focusing its air power against the Houthis in Yemen.

Carter also called upon Turkey, who many criticize for not doing more in the war against ISIS, to close off its border with Syria which "has been porous to foreign fighters".
