ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has honoured Saudi Arabia's King Salman with a state medal and hailed their countries close ties.
"My precious friend, my dear brother, since acceding to the throne in Saudi Arabia, you have made great contributions to development of friendly relations between our countries," Hurriyet news quoted Erdogan as saying as he presented Salman with the medal.
"You have constituted an assurance for regional peace, security, serenity and stability with your astute administration. In this regard, the cooperation and the solidarity you have displayed with our country are beyond all kinds of appreciation. Turkey's and Saudi Arabia's further deepening of their cooperation in every field with your support is an opportunity for regional and global peace," Erdogan added.
Erdogan presented the medal to Salman at an official ceremony at his presidential palace in Ankara. Tuesday is the first day of the kings official visit to Turkey. Salman will be in Turkey for three days.
Talks he will be having in Turkey are likely to revolve around the crisis in Syria, where both oppose the regime of President Bashar al-Assad.
Riyadh and Ankara have developed close strategic ties, Turkey participated in military exercises in Saudi Arabia earlier this year and the Saudi kingdom has deployed some of its F-15 warplanes to Turkey's southeastern Incirlik air base which the coalition uses to bomb Islamic State (ISIS) in neighbouring Syria.
