ERBIL, Kurdistan Region – Kurdish Peshmerga announced that in the course of the past three days, they have killed more than 100 ISIS militants from Tal Afar trying to find a way into Syria.

“After ISIS terrorists suffered defeats in the Tal Afar and A’yaziyah fights, they tried to open an escaping route towards Syria. But, the Peshmerga of Kurdistan were fully on alert ambushing the fleeing militants north of Tal Afar and A’yaziyah,” read a statement from General Command of Peshmerga Forces of the Kurdistan Region (GCPF) on Tuesday

A’yaziyah and Tal Afar were liberated on Sunday by Iraqi security forces. Tal Afar was the last major urban area in Nineveh province controlled by ISIS.

Kurdish Peshmerga have set up defensive lines to the north and have encountered hundreds of ISIS militants trying to flee northward, hoping to escape into Syria. Tal Afar had served as a major link between Iraq and Syria for ISIS militants.

The Peshmerga detailed that over the past 72 hours, 130 ISIS militants have been killed, and “the terrorists suffered defeats and huge damages.”

Also on Tuesday on the West Tigris front, a woman among those fleeing Tal Afar and A’yaziyah blew herself up targeting the Peshmerga, wounding five.

Rudaw correspondent Tahseen Qasim said while welcoming the A’yaziyah displaced persons, a woman among detonated her explosives, killing two other women,a child, and wounding five Peshmerga.

The refugees were fleeing from Sahil al-Malih towards the Peshmerga positions.

Peshmerga forces on Tuesday said were still searching for other ISIS deserters.

Iraqi forces declared that they were in full control of Tal Afar just more than a week after an estimated 50,000 soldiers and paramilitary forces began operations against some 2,000 ISIS militants.

Rudaw’s Ahmed Hunar had reported from Tal Afar on Sunday that the city’s streets and districts seemed to be empty of civilians.

Ahmed, who covered the Mosul offensive extensively, said that the Tal Afar operation is very different since the ISIS group did not put up much resistance. He said he toured the city for about four hours without seeing ISIS bodies in the city, a stark contrast to Mosul where the extremist group fought the advancing Iraqi army for about nine months leaving many casualties from both sides, as well civilians.
