SHINGAL, Mosul province - Kurdish bases in Shingal fought off two early morning attacks by ISIS fighters, a Peshmerga commander told Rudaw on Saturday.
“Several ISIS militants were killed during the operation, with no causalities on the Peshmerga side,” said Isa Zeway, commander of the 4th Peshmerga brigade in Shingal.
Zeway added that the security situation in Shingal was improving and the extremists' firepower had been reduced to light weapons.
“Daesh [the Arabic name for ISIS] doesn't have the military strength to restart heavy attacks,” he said.
In recent months, Shingal has been struggling to recover from a devastating ISIS attack last year that unleashed a spree of killings, rape and kidnappings against the area's predominantly Kurdish Yezidi population.
