SHINGAL, Rudaw — The Kurdish Peshmerga forces in Shingal have repelled several attacks launched by Islamic State (IS/ISIS) militants on Saturday morning.

In a major ground offensive last week, nearly 8,000 Kurdish forces lifted a four-month siege on Mount Shingal. The operation to retake Shingal began on December 17, and was successfully executed on December 20 after Peshmerga forces controlled 2,700 square kilometres.

Brigadier Bahram Yassin in Shingal told Rudaw that ISIS has attacked the newly established Peshmerga base in Braiati area. One Peshmerga was killed, and two others were wounded in the attack.

Kurdistan Region President Massoud Barzani vowed to curb spread of ISIS on Kurdish soil, “We have no precondition when it comes to fighting the ISIS — we will fight them wherever they are,” Barzani said while speaking on Mount Shingal last week.
