KHURMATU, Kurdistan Region - The ongoing clashes in Khurmatu, between the Kurdish Peshmerga and the Shiite militia known as Hashd al-Shaabi, has seen many of Khurmatu's residents flee.

“We don’t know what is going to happen in one hour. Just like yesterday, we might have to flee the city. We don’t care about our livelihoods here, we only care about our live. Even if we have money life is too tough in this city. We need to live, we need safety. Bullets are whizzing through the city like flies," one resident told Rudaw

"Civilian homes have been torched by Hashd al-Shaabi," said another Khurmatu resident.

Efforts to date to bring about an effective ceasefire have so far failed.

“Peshmerga were killed right after the ceasefire agreement. They also attacked us yesterday evening. I don’t know what kind of agreement this is," another resident told Rudaw.
