ERBIL, Kurdistan Region – Two children were killed and a third wounded on Friday after they triggered a bomb planted by ISIS on their retreat last year from the predominantly Kurdish town of Jalawla in northern Diyala province, a police official confirmed.
The three children were playing in an empty house Friday afternoon in Jalawla’s Shoorta neighborhood when an ISIS bomb killed them.
“Due to the incident, two kids of Arab and Turkmen origins were killed and another wounded,” Ali Jamal Qaduri, a Garmiyan police spokesperson, told Rudaw.
Qaduri added that the bomb belonged to ISIS militants who had planted it in the house when they were in control of the town.
Jalawla was taken by ISIS militants in August last year. Kurdish forces recaptured it three months later.
As soon as it was out of ISIS control, hundreds of families returned to the town.
Jalawla is part of the so-called “disputed territories” which are claimed by both the central government in Baghdad and the autonomous Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG).
