ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - Kurdish Peshmerga forces on Tuesday repelled an assault by the Iran-backed Hashd al-Shaabi and the Iraqi army near Rabia on Iraq’s border with Syria, destroying a badger truck and two hummers, said an official.

Mansur Barzani, a Peshmerga commander confirmed that clashes erupted “at 8:20am, destroying  an armored badger truck and two hummers of the Hashd al-Shaabi.”

Barzani said they initially warned the Hashd al-Shaabi against their advance, “but they did” causing the confrontation.

After the brief confrontation, Iraqi troops asked for ceasefire, he added.

The commander explained there were no casualties among the Peshmerga.

He added the advancing forces had come from Rabia.

Tensions rose between Erbil and Baghdad in the wake of a military incursion by Shiite militias and Iraqi army into the Kurdistani or disputed areas taking  control of oil-rich Kirkuk.
