ERBIL, Kurdistan Region—Wrapping up his two-day visit to Turkey with a meeting at the Turkish parliament, Masoud Barzani, President of the Kurdistan Region, has departed for Europe.

Barzani visited the Turkish parliament on Wednesday and met with parliament speaker Ismail Kahraman. He “thanked the Turkish people who, with their will, supported Turkish legitimacy and democracy, and foiled the coup,” reads a statement issued by the Kurdistan Region Presidency.

In the meeting with the Turkish parliament, the deputy parliament speaker and representatives of the three largest parties in the parliament, the Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP), the Republican People’s Party (CHP), and the Justice and Development Party (AKP), were all present.

“The parliament speaker expressed his delight at Barzani’s visit and in the meeting spoke of the failed coup attempt and the attack on the parliament building during the failed coup. He said that the failure of the putschists will deepen democracy in Turkey.”

Barzani arrived in Ankara on Tuesday and met with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Prime Minister Binali Yildirim.

Earlier on Wednesday, he spoke to Turkish media in Ankara. He said that in his meetings with Turkey’s leaders he had discussed the war against the Islamic State (ISIS), better cooperation to combat the militant group, and deepening ties between Erbil and Ankara.

“Certainly, the ISIS war one of the focal points of our conversation and we agreed on how to cooperate on combating this terrorist organization,” Barzani said. “It is clear that big changes are coming to the region and they call for more cooperation.”

Barzani added that his delegation had congratulated the president and people of Turkey for their victory over last month’s coup attempt.

Barzani’s visit was on the invitation of President Erdogan. He was received by Yildirim with a display of the Kurdish national flag for the second time in less than a year.

Barzani traveled to Turkey with his chief of staff Fuad Hussein and KRG’s spokesperson Safeen Dizayee.

Barzani left for Europe on Wednesday.
