ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - A recent delegation to the Kurdistan Region by members of the European Parliament has reported back to its peers on an array of issues facing the region, including the potential push for independence. Dlawar Azhgayi, the European Union representative of the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG), told Rudaw on Tuesday the parliament discussed the current security situation in the Kurdistan Region and political and financial arrangements between Baghdad and Erbil. Calls for an independent Kurdish state were also part of the discussions on Monday, Azhgayi said. “It has been discussed that the Kurdistan region will hold a referendum to decide independence, but this has been delayed due to the war against ISIS in the region,” Azhgayi added. The European Parliament delegation visited with KRG counterparts last week to assess security and political issues.
