ERBIL, Kurdistan Region – The president of the Kurdistan Region has denounced the murder of a moderate preacher in Erbil on Tuesday night.
“The murder of cleric Wushyar was an act perpetrated against moderate voices and coexistence. This inhuman act was against all, especially against me,” Masoud Barzani said in a statement on Wednesday.
Dr. Wushyar Ismail was killed by unidentified armed men in front of his house. The moderate preacher has ties to the Kurdistan Islamic Union party.
His murder has drawn condemnation from local political parties.
Barzani has reassured his family and loved ones that the Kurdish security establishment will do its utmost to track down those responsible for his murder.
