ERBIL, Kurdistan Region — The public prosecutor in the Kurdistan Region has filed a case at an Erbil court against 11 Iraqi officials among them leaders of the Shia militia force of Hashd al-Shaabi.
An official letter requests Erbil’s high court to open files on the Iraqi officials based on Iraq’s penal code 111 of the year 1969.
The letter does not provide any details as to why it seeks the prosecution of the Iraqi officials other than saying: “according to information we’ve obtained and evidence in our hands,”
The most prominent names on the list are Qais al-Khazali, the leader of the Asaib Ahl al-Haq militia, Hanan Fatlawi, a female MP from the Shiite Alliance and Hassan Toran, a Turkmen police official from Kirkuk.
This move follows a similar action by the Iraqi judicial authorities who issued arrest warrants for a number of Kurdish officials, chief among them Kosrat Rasul Ali, Kurdistan Region’s Vice President on charges of describing the Iraqi army as “invaders”.
And on Sunday, a number of lawyers staged a gathering in front of the Erbil court condemning the arrest warrant for Vice President Rasul.
The letter is signed by Jawad Fatah Agha, acting public prosecutor and sent to Erbil’s high court.
