ERBIL, Kurdistan Region – Kurdish Peshmerga forces have taken complete control of Bashiqa town, 13 km northeast of Mosul’s outskirts.
“The Peshmerga forces have completely controlled Bashiqa town,” Halgurd Hikmat, the media director for the Peshmerga, told Rudaw English.
Asked whether there are still any ISIS militants inside the town, or whether or not the Peshmerga have entered the town, he declined to comment, but added that this time, the Peshmerga were using a “different tactic.” He did not give further details.
There were civilians trapped in Bashiqa town, Rudaw’s correspondent Hevidar Ahmed reported from the frontline Sunday afternoon.
Hikmat also said the Peshmerga forces have now “passed Bashiqa.”
Earlier on Sunday, the Peshmerga General Command said in a statement that they have taken control of a portion of the Bashiqa-Mosul highway, preventing ISIS reinforcements from reaching Mosul. They have also cordoned off eight villages in the area.
