Three gunmen attacked the offices of the Erbil governorate on Monday morning, entering the building at 7:00am and taking two hostages. Security forces engaged the gunmen, killing all three.
One civilian hostage died from wounds sustained during the incident. It is not immediately known whether the civilian was injured by the gunmen or in cross-fire with security forces. Four security force members were injured.
Officials say the three gunmen are from Erbil. Initial indications suggest they are members of ISIS. The governor has described the incident as a terrorist attack.
The building is now clear of attackers and the situation is under control.
No group has claimed responsibility for the attack.
