ERBIL, Kurdistan Region – Unidentified gunmen attacked a checkpoint in Khanaqin, killing a policeman on Saturday night.

"At around 9pm tonight, some unidentified gunmen, suspected to be ISIS, fired on a joint checkpoint of the police and Asayesh (security) forces of Khanaqin in the Bawa Mahmood area with snipers and Kalashnikov rifles, killing a policeman," Lieutenant Colonel Ahmed Mustafa told Rudaw.

The attackers also planted a bomb near Mekhas village, targeting "some Asayesh forces who had been rushing to the spot,” said Mustafa.

There were no fatalities in the bombing.

Peshmerga forces have been deployed to the area targeted by the suspected ISIS gunmen and are taking "tough" security measures, he added.

Khanaqin is located within the disputed areas where ISIS has taken advantage of security gaps between Iraqi and Kurdish forces.

Residents of 31 villages in the area have fled their homes, afraid of a resurgent ISIS.
