ERBIL, Kurdistan Region – ISIS militants, also known as Daesh in Arabic, bombed a minaret in Shingal, the town’s most historical monument, a Peshmerga commander said.

Isa Zeway, commander of the 4th Peshmerga brigade in Shingal, said that the militants also begun destroying more civilian homes on Sunday morning.

“This morning ISIS militants bombed the Shingal minaret, which was the most historical heritage site in the city,” Zeway  said. “Since the early morning, ISIS has begun bombing homes inside Shingal.”

The Shingal minaret, an ancient site, was seen as a religious symbol for Yezidi Kurds.

Shingal has been struggling to recover from a devastating ISIS attack that unleashed a spree of killings, rape and kidnappings against the town's predominantly Yezidi population.
