KIRKUK, Kurdistan Region— A Kirkuk city judge and three of his bodyguards were shot dead by gunmen Sunday morning, Kirkuk police said.

“A number of unknown gunmen have shot Kirkuk’s court judge Ibrahim Khamis and three of his guards on Quds Street in Kirkuk,” a Kurdish police official identified only as Razwan told Rudaw.

According to the source, the judge succumbed to his wounds 30 minutes after being rushed to the hospital.

The gunmen fled the scene of the shooting, said the police.

Kirkuk governor Najmaldin Karim called the act an assassination and described Khamis, “as a dear judge of our city who worked hard to enforce the law and justice and serve the people of Kirkuk,”
