Waste disposal is a mounting issue in Iraqi Kurdistan. Littering is a problem, but even if trash is collected it’s taken to massive dumps and often burned. Often the trash blows away, reaching the water supply, farms, local properties, and grazing areas for animals. Scavenging for parts of any worth is a growing source of income for informal recyclers. Trash mountains can be found even in the tourist town of Shaqlawa, just a few kilometers outside Erbil.
