ERBIL, Kurdistan Region – Peshmerga forces backed by coalition jets repulsed an attack by Islamic State (ISIS) insurgents on the village of Salihiah in the Zumar area on Tuesday, in which one Kurdish soldier was wounded and at least four militants killed.
The militants launched the surprise attack on Peshmerga bases using Humvees and armored vehicles loaded with explosives and ammunition, a Kurdish military commander said.
“Today, in the village of Salihiah the militants carried out an assault on Peshmerga bases but they were defeated,” said Peshmerga commander Brigadier Mushir Ramazan. “They left four bodies behind,” he added, saying that one Kurdish soldier was wounded but was not in critical condition.
“Once again, they used armored vehicles and Humvees, but the brave Peshmerga destroyed them with the help of coalition warplaes,” Ramazan said.
Last month, Peshmerga forces pushed out ISIS fighters from villages in Zumar, which is near the Syrian border.
