Christians in the Erbil neighbourhood Ankawa celebrated Tuesday evening as Iraqi forces fought to liberate Qaraqosh, south of Mosul, what was once the largest Christian town in Iraq.

When it fell to ISIS in August 2014, many of its residents sought refuge in the Kurdistan Region.

"We have been through a lot of suffering and today we are looking forward to returning to our region as soon as possible," Hazem Djedjou Cardomi, in a crowd of hundreds, told AFP.
