ERBIL, Kurdistan Region – A camp for Kobane refugees, funded by the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) and on the Turkish-Syrian border, is expected to be opened today, Kurdistan’s parliamentary secretary said.
A delegation of six MPs from Erbil is in Turkey for the opening of the new camp, set up for thousands of refugees who fled Kobane last month as the town came under intense attacks by the Islamic State (ISIS).
Earlier last month, another parliamentary delegation comprising 10 MPs visited Kobane to meet with the town’s Kurdish defenders and report back its findings.
“The Kurdistan parliament has shouldered the setting up of the camp and providing all of its needs,” parliamentary secretary Fakhradin Qadir told Rudaw.
Also this month, around 1,500 refugees from Kobane arrived in the Kurdistan Region, where they have now settled in Duhok province.
More than 160,000 people fled Kobane last month to seek shelter across the Turkish border.
