Peshmerga endure fresh ISIS chemical attack

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - At least three Peshmerga were wounded by Islamic State (ISIS)-launched shells loaded with mustard gas on Wednesday on the Makhmour front, a  Peshmerga official on the Makhmour front told Rudaw.

"On Wednesday, three Peshmerga were wounded by an ISIS bomb shell and were rushed to the hospital after suffering breathing problems from the chemical agent," said Sirwan Barzani the commander of the Peshmerga on the Gwer-Makhmour front-lines.

"ISIS has used various chemical weapons against the Peshmerga on Makhmour front and according to our information they have once again used mustard gas against our forces. We await the chemical weapon experts to conclusively confirm this," Barzani added.

ISIS militants fired 45 mortar shells loaded with mustard gas at the Peshmerga frontlines back in August 12 2015.

On Monday, tests carried out by the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) confirmed that Islamic State (ISIS) attacked Kurdish Peshmerga forces with mustard gas on that month.

The results of the laboratory tests have yet to be officially announced. However a source from within the OPCW have confirmed that the samples tested came back positive for sulfar mustard.
