German defense minister pledges more military aid to the Peshmerga

BERLIN- German Defense Minister Ursula von der Leyen pledged more military aid and advisors to the Kurdistan Region for the fight against the Islamic State (ISIS).

Der Leyen told Rudaw reporter in Germany that the Kurds could rest assured that more military and weapons are on the way.

The Defense Minister said that the number of advisors will be increased to 150 and that they will expand the training courses for the Peshmerga.

She added that details of the new aid package is being studied and delivered in “the most efficient way,”

Germany has been one of the most active backers of the Kurdish Peshmerga in the fight against ISIS and der Leyen as Defense Minister has visited the Kurdistan Region twice this year.

The German Defense Minister lauded the inclusive nature of the Peshmerga forces that include Yezidis and Christians among its ranks, saying that this kind of diversity is essential for victory against.
