ERBIL, Kurdistan Region--Masoud Barzani, President of the Kurdistan Region, in a message published on the eve of the anniversary of the establishment of the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP), stressed that independence is the only solution for Kurdistan, and asked for all the Kurdish parties to end the political deadlock.
Barzani announced that the KDP are ready to solve through dialogue the political issues that are currently plaguing the region, and are committed to fulfilling the Kurdish people’s hope, which is independence.
“By taking into account the high interest of the Kurdish people, the sensitivity of the situation, and the opportunities and challenges that are in front of the people of Kurdistan, the KDP is always ready to solve problems and ready for dialogue. In this we consider the will and demand of the people of Kurdistan as a reference and we are committed to fulfilling the Kurdish people’s hope, which is independence and sovereignty,” Barzani said in the message published on Monday.
Barzani repeated his commitment to the people of Kurdistan that he will pursue his efforts for Kurdish independence and considers independence to be the only solution for Kurdish security and development.
“In order for Kurdistan to be able to protect itself, to get past its difficulties, and step into recovery and development, there is no other way but independence. And in this, the Peshmerga have more right than anyone else to decide about the self-determination of Kurdistan, because they are protecting Kurdistan with their blood and souls.”
“The message of independence is the message of peace, an end to the wars and tragedies,” he said.
“Independent Kurdistan will never be a threat for anyone; on the contrary it will become a factor of stability, coexistence, and brotherhood between nations in the region.”
Barzani asked all the Kurdish parties to be responsible and end the current political crisis.
“Regarding the current initiative to end the political crisis, I hope that all the parties, including the KDP, favor the sensitivity of this stage over any individual interest. All should work to make the initiative successful and end the crisis," remembering their historical responsibility and the people’s demands, he added.
The three main parties of the Kurdistan Region have been in a political stalemate for more than one year. The Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK), the Change Movement (Gorran), and the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) have repeatedly failed to reach an agreement over the post of the Region’s president, his constitutional powers, and his term in office.
