ERBIL, Kurdistan Region – Internally displaced persons (IDPs) from the Nineveh Plains launched a campaign under the name “We are all Peshmerga” on Monday to encourage people to donate blood to support the Peshmerga forces.

“As a social organization from Mosul, we came to donate blood for our hero Peshmerga,” a Kurd from Mosul who is now settled in the Kurdistan Region told Rudaw.

He added that the campaigners hope the Peshmerga forces will be safe in their latest assault against Islamic State militants on the Khazir front.

“We hope that the Peshmerga free Mosul for us and God willing we are hoping that Mr. President Barzani [agrees] that the Peshmerga will participate in the Mosul operation,” he said.

More than 20 IDPs from Mosul, ISIS’ stronghold in Iraq, participated in the blood donor campaign.

“The Peshmerga forces have made many sacrifices. We are all ashamed in front of the Peshmerga forces and don’t know how to award these heroes,” an Arab resident of Mosul said. “They sacrifice themselves to defend peace.”

Thousands of residents of Mosul fled the city and surrounding areas when ISIS took over the city in June 2014.

“I am from Nineveh. I am confident that the Peshmerga can free our region and put an end to the tensions and hatred that exists in the region,” he added.

Kurdish officials estimate more than half a million more people will flee to the Kurdistan Region and seek refuge when the Mosul offensive starts.
