Delegations from the Iraqi government, KRG, local politicians, foreign diplomatic missions gathered in Halabja to attend the 30th anniversary remembrance ceremony of the genocide with survivors.
The city of Halabja is remembering those killed in the largest chemical weapon attack against a civilian population: 5,000 were killed on March 16, 1988 when the former Iraqi regime dropped a deadly cocktail of mustard gas, cyanide, and sarin in an attempt to eradicate the Kurdish resistance.
Another 10,000 were injured, many of them and their children still suffering the effects of the attack today.
Since the attack, 104 further people have died from the lingering effects. The latest case
was on Saturday.
Halabja victims
have filed multi-billion dollar lawsuit against German firms and plan to seek justice for the survivors in a special court in the Kurdistan Region.
