ERBIL, Kurdistan Region – Election commission officials say they have so far examined 28 of the 228 disputed ballot boxes from the Kurdistan Region’s September 30 election. So far the results match those provided by their respective polling stations. Final results could be announced within 24 to 48 hours.
“The results of the counting match the results provided by the polling stations to the commission,” a source from the commission told Rudaw
There have been 1,045 complaints filed to the election commission by Kurdish parties. Each red tapped box contains anywhere between 300 to 499 votes.
Eight specialized teams are tasked with opening and counting the red tapped ballot boxes, Jutyar Adil, a member of the commission council, told Rudaw.
“It isn’t necessarily the case that the results of all the ballot boxes will be annulled. There are some boxes that have a complaint against them, while some others didn’t pass commission’s measures,” Adil said.
The Change Movement (Gorran) and New Generation have also expressed concerns over the preliminary results, claiming both the ruling Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) and the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) have increased their vote share through rigging and corruption – something denied by both parties.
According to 85 percent of the official preliminary results released by the commission, the KDP has secured 44 seats while the PUK 21, Gorran 12, New Generation 8, Komal 7, Toward Reform 5 and the Modern Coalition 1.
