ERBIL, Kurdistan Region — Peshmerga forces launched a blistering attack on the Islamic State near Mount Shingal and reportedly killed 30 militants of the group, according to a Kurdish military source Sunday.
Major General Hashem Sitayi, the Peshmerga commander in Shingal, told Rudaw that following an intense fight on Sunday morning Peshmerga forces retook Gabara village to the west of Sinjar City.
He added that the Peshmerga destroyed four ISIS military vehicles and 30 ISIS corpses were strewn over the ground.
According to the source, Yezidi fighters who previously controlled the village had abandoned the village one night before and ISIS gunmen entered the village.
On Tuesday Kurdish forces repelled another Islamic State attack on Shingal City and killed more than 25 of the group’s militants.
