DOHUK, Kurdistan Region - Arabs of Shamar in Rabia, on the Kurdistan-Rojava border, joined the Kurdish Peshmerga to protect their homeland from Islamic State (ISIS) by creating the Shamar Unit, which is part of Brigade Eight of the Kurdistan Region's Ministry of Peshmerga.

Kurds from other areas of the Kurdistan Region have also joined the force.

Arabs, who constitute the majority of the population of Rabia, are grateful to the Peshmerga who liberated their city and made their homes safe again.

Islamic State took over Rabia in August 2014. The Peshmerga recaptured it in October 2014.
