Two branches of the Kurdistan Democratic Party of Iran (KDPI) have been speaking of reunification for several years, most recently at one of the parties' 16th congress. The KDPI split into two after its 13th congress in 2006.

The main group is led by Mustafa Hejri and the splinter group by Khalid Azizi. Both parties still keep the same name.

The mother group under Hejri sent a letter to his former comrade Azizi this week and asked him to resume their talks for reunification.  “Let’s look back and learn from our mistakes,” the letter said.

The KDPI, founded in 1945, is the oldest Kurdish party in Iran and once the strongest. Now they think the time has come to reunite and work for the Kurds' political and cultural rights in Iran.

Both groups are based in the Kurdistan Region and Azizi and Hejri have held a few informal meetings since 2012. Their negotiations still continue though at a slow pace.
