ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - A group of five ISIS militants launched a pre-dawn assault on a Kurdish Peshmerga base in Kirkuk on Sunday, said an official, adding the attack was repulsed and the militants killed.

“Early this morning at 2:45am, a number of ISIS militants had infiltrated close to the main base of Front 4," said Hiwa Abdullah, deputy commander of the southern Kirkuk front. "Fortunately, as soon as they reached the base, guards responded to them."

He added that as a result of the confrontation, two of the militants detonated themselves.

When the confrontation further expanded, “the three other militants were also killed,” Abdullah added.

The Peshmerga also suffered casualties as two were killed and six others wounded, he said.

Abdullah said as ISIS militants are “suffering many setbacks, they aim to inflict harm on strategic places,” as they did in Hamam Alil in south of Mosul earlier this month when they attacked a major base of the Iraqi army.

ISIS militants had disguised themselves by wearing Peshmerga uniforms and removing their beards.

Kaywan military base is 15 kilometers south of Kirkuk city.

A Rudaw reporter said, Peshmerga forces have arrived in the area as reinforcement to bring the situation under control.
