ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - The Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) will allocate a seat from its share of the 21-member constitution amendment committee to an official from the Kurdish Yezidi minority, according to a parliamentarian on Tuesday.
Seikh Shamo, the only Yezidi in the Kurdistan Parliament and also member of the KDP, said “We tried hard to give the Yezidis a seat on the committee, but other political parties did not accept it. Therefore, the KDP faction decided to give us a seat of its share.”
“It does not matter who is going to be the Yezidi representative within the committee. We are going to decide collectively and we will assign someone understands Yezidi religion and culture who also has an expertise in terms of lawmaking.”
The 21-member constitution amendment committee of the Kurdistan Parliament is comprised of officials from different politcal factions.
