A large number of French officials and public figures who consider themselves friends to the Kurds, in a gathering in Paris called on the Iraqi government to accept the Kurdistan Regional Government's (KRG) offer for dialogue with Erbil following the KRG's announcement it could freeze the referendum results.
Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo believes her country could play an effective role in bringing Erbil and Baghdad closer to engage in dialogue and “resolving the disputes because other countries listen to France.”
She believes other democratic countries in the world left the Kurds in limbo and turned their backs on them after the fight against ISIS largely ended in the region.
Remi Feraud, a senator of Paris echoed the sentiment that France “could undoubtedly play a role in putting pressure on the Iraqi government to engage in a settlement with the Kurdish government.”
He rejected claims that Kurds violated the constitution, saying “It was not the Kurds who violated the constitution, but Iraq itself.”
