ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - At least 20 Islamic State (ISIS) militants were killed in the early hours of Saturday morning in an attack on the Kurdish Peshmerga forces in the Christian town of Tel Skuf, in northern Mosul.
At around 6:00 am, ISIS militants attempted to infiltrate Peshmerga frontlines in the town of Tel Skuf. But, before they could reach the front, they were repulsed by the Peshmerga and 20 militants were killed, a Peshmerga official told Rudaw.
He added that "as soon as they were defeated, coalition warplanes shelled them."
There were no casualties among the Peshmerga, according to the Peshmerga official.
When ISIS swept into a third of Iraq in mid-2014, Tel Skuf residents had to flee for their lives and sought shelter in the Kurdistan Region, fearing the group's atrocities.
A US serviceman was killed in Tek Skuf in early May when some 400 ISIS militants launched a furious assault on the Peshmerga. ISIS briefly took control of some of the Peshmerga frontlines, but the militants were pushed back with air support from the US-led coalition, military sources said.
