ERBIL, Kurdistan Region – Books that “don’t match Iran’s standards” were removed from the Tehran International Book Fair, an official of the fair said on Friday.
“In the Arabic section those books that were advocating extremism and in the Latin [English] section those that had unsuitable pictures were removed,” Ali Faraidooni told IRNA.
Books on offer at the fair go through several levels of censorship before the fair begins. And personnel from the supervision committee attend the book fair daily to check the contents of the books in the Arabic and English sections, the official noted.
Faraidooni added that those books which use a “counterfeit name” for the Persian Gulf were also removed by the committee. Referring to the Persian Gulf as the Arabic Gulf is forbidden in Iran.
The Tehran International Book Fair started on May 4th and goes on until the 14th.
According to the fair’s officials, some 6,000 foreign publishers attended the fair
